School Update

To the students and families of MRS,

We would like to extend heartfelt thank you to our Parent Association and School Council for their continued support of learning at Maple Ridge! Their generosity brings exciting experiences and valuable resources to our students, including residencies, document cameras, makerspace materials like ChompSaws, sensory tools, and new phys ed scooters. These contributions help bring curiosity, creativity, and learning to life!

We are also incredibly grateful for our wonderful parent volunteers! From puppet workshops and Teachers Pet experiences to TELUS Spark field studies, your support makes so much possible. Today, our AM Kindergarten students enjoyed their first field study to Weaselhead! These meaningful learning experiences would not be possible without the time and care of our volunteers. Thank you for all you do!

Have a wonderful weekend,
Maple Ridge Staff

Notes from the Music Room

This week we listened and responded to “In the Hall of the Mountain King”, by Edvard Grieg.  Through movement, story, and tracking steady beat, students explored changes in tempo and dynamics.  We introduced the words Crescendo and Accelerando as music vocabulary to describe music getting louder and faster.

Kindergarten students explored their voices with the poem, Chop Chop Chippity Chop. Ask your child to whisper/sing/think/call/speak this poem while performing steady beat actions for you!   We met our beat buddies this week - what song did we sing to them?

Grade 2 explored steady beat and sound effects this week with “Pass the Pumpkin”.  Our passing game involves passing on a steady beat and taking turns to play different instruments to create sound effects and mood.  We also performed rhythmic word patterns and determining their rhythm patterns.

Grade 3 students are preparing for ticka ticka (16th notes) and we practiced two songs this week through instruments and a game.   We analyzed melody on the music staff to help us understand when to sing high and low for our song.

  • Fun Fact: A recorder changes pitch when we cover or uncover its holes, changing the length of the vibrating air column inside.

Fire Drills

Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school. We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year. So far this year we have practiced two fire drills with our second one taking place today. Our students and staff treat each drill as though it was the real thing, and we are very proud of their performance during those drills. Teachers keep class lists with them during all drills and attendance is always taken.

Practicing is an opportunity for us to learn so we are prepared for any circumstance that may arise.

Traffic Safety Reminders

We want to remind our families of some traffic considerations during pick-up and drop-off times as we have noticed some illegal U-turns, and parking too close to the crosswalk, specifically on Mapleton Drive SE. As the safety of our students is of utmost importance, we remind all families to follow the rules of the road. We greatly appreciate your support with this.

Volunteers for Alien Inline Skating

MRS Alien In Line VolunteerOur students are excited for our inline skating residency from Oct. 21 to Nov. 6. Many students require adult assistance with putting on skates and protective equipment in a timely manner. If you are able, please sign up for a block to support our students during this residency. Thank you for your support.
