School Update

To the students and families of MRS,

Our Welcome Assembly today was a wonderful opportunity for us to gather as a community and celebrate the many highlights and activities our students at Maple Ridge will get to experience over the coming year.

As part of this assembly, Mr. Laidlaw and Ms. McNeil were able to read the story “Invisible Web”. This beautiful picture book inspires the audience to recognize, nurture and celebrate the infinite bonds of connection through a powerful call for peace and compassion worldwide. This story was also read separately to our afternoon kindergarten students as they were unable to join us today.

When you have a moment this weekend, we encourage you to have a conversation with your child to allow them to highlight the invisible web connections they have with family, friends and members of our school community.

Wishing everyone a wonderful and relaxing weekend.

With appreciation,

Maple Ridge Staff

The Usborne Bookfair is Coming! -September 24th – 26th

Usborne has award-winning books for toddlers to teens, from board books and chapter books to YA novels, from dinosaurs to economics, from sticker books to world history, French editions and much more!

Purchases at the bookfair will earn 25% in free books to add to our library collection so this is an opportunity to get some great reading for your family while benefiting the school at the same time!

The children will be able to preview the books during the week and the fair will be open for sales as follows:

Thursday 26th – student shopping during the day and open throughout the parent-teacher evening.

If you’re unable to shop in person for any reason, you can also browse and order online at any time until midnight on Friday Sept. 27th

Please use this shopping link if ordering online, and leave ‘ship to host’ selected in order to avoid being charged shipping.  https://tinyurl.com/yz5ej69a

If you have any questions related to the fair, our Usborne consultant is Carol Cooper carolcooper@shaw.ca and she’ll be happy to help.

Healthy Hunger

Parent Association is excited to offer our Fun Lunches and Snacks again this year through Healthy Hunger. This is a great fundraiser as a portion of the proceeds from each sale go directly towards Maple Ridge School.

If you would like to participate you will need to register your child at the Healthy Hunger website at https://healthyhunger.ca/index.php.

As a reminder, the cut off for next week's Healthy Hunger (Little Caesars) is tomorrow.

Thank you for supporting Maple Ridge School with your orders!

Meet the Teacher Night & Family Social– Sept 26

While the details are still in the works, we are excited to share that in with partnership with our School Council & Parent Association, we are looking to host a meet the parent night on the evening of September 26th that includes food trucks, opportunities to engage in play and connect with families in our community, and a chance to visit the classroom and meet the teacher. Stay tuned for more information.

MRS School Council & Parent Association

Despite the dry weather and water restrictions, our summer volunteers were able to keep the students' garden boxes in amazing shape. Thank you to all who took time out of your summer days to keep the plants flourishing!

Need labels?

If you're ordering labels, in the (sometimes seemingly futile) effort of keeping your kids' things out of the lost and found, please consider using Mabel's Labels:

·       Visit campaigns.mabelslabels.com and type in “Maple Ridge School (Calgary)”. The “(Calgary)” part is super important to be sure our school gets the fundraising dollars, which we use for things like the glass residency, alien in-line skating and the gaga ball pit.

·       Use code MAPLERIDGE10 at checkout for 10% off regular price label products.

Food Trucks on Sept 26

When you come to meet your child's teacher, the Parent Association is planning for food trucks to be at the school in the hopes it helps with the dinner rush! Grab a bite, stay to visit with one another and give your kids some time on the playground or gaga ball pit. More details to come.

Save the dates

All parents/guardians are invited to School Council/Parent Association meetings, held roughly once a month. They're a great opportunity to hear from teachers and about what's happening at the school. Meetings start at 6:30pm, and details about how to join are sent in advance by the school. Here are the planned dates for the year, to mark on your calendar: Sept 19, Oct 17, Nov 21, Jan 16 (AGM), Feb 20, Apr 24, May 22

Label Everything

Every year we send significant amounts of clothing and other lost items to charity that go unclaimed in our Lost and Found. Items found with your child(s) name labelled on them will be returned directly to them.

Designate a Meeting Place

It is crucial to establish a designated meeting spot for 3:40 pick-up times. All students in grades 1-4 will be dismissed from their designated exit doors and should go directly to the meeting spots identified with their families. Please ensure that your meeting spot is not in the school parking lot, as this area is off-limits to parents and students. For Kindergarten students, teachers will wait with them until a parent arrives for pick-up. We have instructed all students that if they reach their meeting spot and no one is there to pick them up after five minutes, they should come to the office through the front entrance of the school for assistance.
