School Update

To the students and families of MRS,

We are excited to inform you that on Monday, April 8, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. This celestial event presents a unique learning opportunity for our students and staff. However, it is essential to prioritize safety, as viewing the eclipse without proper precautions can pose serious risks to vision.

The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m. As a school, all students and staff will remain indoors and away from windows to the outside between 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

For our Kindergarten families, we will continue with the same dismissal and entrance times, however, we encourage you to remind your child not to stare at the sun during AM Kindergarten pick-up and PM Kindergarten drop-off.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school, as your safety and well-being are a top priority.

For more safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.

Alien Inline Skating Experience

We are pleased to inform you that Alien In-Line Skating Program has been scheduled and will take place April 17- May 3, 2024.

Please sign the Acknowledgment of Risk form that will be sent home on Monday April 8th and return to your child’s teacher by Friday April 12, 2024.

This experience has been made possible by the Maple Ridge School Council with their generous financial contribution, allowing this opportunity to be zero cost to families.

Program Content: Students will be working on basic and advanced skating skills. Skills introduced will vary based on students’ abilities and may include standing on skates/basic position, simple forward motion, several ways to stop, several ways to turn, safe skating strategies, road/pathway etiquette and non-ariel jumping. This is a supplemental activity for the Physical Education and Wellness Curriculum, specifically Movement Skill Development, Active Living and Safety.

Equipment: Due to health reasons your child in encouraged to bring their own helmet to participate in this activity. It can be a hockey/ringette, bike, or skiing helmet. Alien In-Line will be supplying the skates, wrist guards, and knee pads. They will have extra helmets on hand to use should your child need. Bringing your own pads and inline skates are discouraged as the company is required to use certified equipment for liability reasons.

Volunteers Required: As you can imagine, volunteers help this activity run more smoothly. At this time we are asking for two volunteers, with a valid police clearance on file, for each session. All volunteers are required to book ahead of time. Please book for either the morning or the afternoon to ensure we have enough volunteers for each session.

If you are interested in volunteering, please follow this link to sign up for an AM or PM shift:https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0B4BAFA928A6F5C07-48872414-alien
